On the morning of February 7, Mr. Geng and his delegation from Hanlong Group visited our company to inspect our silicon metal color-sorting machines. During the product demonstration in our production workshop, they sequentially sorted silicon metal samples of various particle sizes. Mr. Geng highly praised the precision and reject rate of our equipment’s color-sorting performance and subsequently signed a procurement contract for four color-sorting machines.
“Metallic silicon” (also referred to as “industrial silicon” in China) is a commodity name that emerged in the mid-1960s. Its emergence was closely linked to the rise of the semiconductor industry. The internationally accepted practice is to classify commercial silicon into metallic silicon and semiconductor-grade silicon. Metallic silicon is produced by smelting quartz and coke in an electric furnace, with silicon as the main constituent at about 98% (silicon grades containing 99.99% Si are also classified as metallic silicon), while the remaining impurities include iron, aluminum, calcium, and others. Semiconductor-grade silicon, on the other hand, is high-purity metallic silicon used for manufacturing semiconductor devices; it is sold in polycrystalline and single-crystal forms, with the former being more affordable and the latter commanding a higher price. Depending on its application, it is further divided into various specifications. According to statistics, global consumption of metallic silicon in 1985 totaled approximately 500,000 metric tons, of which about 60% was used in aluminum alloys, less than 30% in organosilicon products, roughly 3% in semiconductors, and the remainder in steelmaking and precision ceramics, among other applications.
